Two Quarters Quotes

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose. -- Jim Elliot

If we would talk less and pray more about them, things would be better than they are in the world: at least, we should be better enabled to bear them. -- John Owen

Believe your beliefs and doubt your doubts.-- F. F. Bosworth

Two Quarters Quotes-February

On faith...
We don't follow him in order to be loved, we are loved so we follow him. -- Neil Anderson

Is it not a glorious thing to know that, no difference how unjust a thing may be, or how absolutely it may seem to be from Satan, by the time it reaches us it is God's will for us, and will work for good to us? For all things work together for good to us who love God. (Don't know who said it but I read it on someone else's blog this week)

Two Quarter Quotes-November

On Godly living...
Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance. -- C. S. Lewis

On relationships...
God never gives us discernment in order that we may criticize, but that we may intercede. -- Oswald Chambers

On faith...
A love that requires absolute assurance in order to act is not love...when we can say we will follow God regardless of the uncertainty, then real faith is born - for love acts not whenever a certain set of criteria has been met, but rather because it is in the nature of love to act."~Pete Rollins

Two Quarters Quotes-October

On relationships...
We never touch people so lightly that we don't leave a trace.

On money...

The worst poverty is not to live in a small house, but to live in a small world. -Roy L. Smith

On faith...

God delights to increase the faith of his children. We ought, instead of wanting no trials before victory, no exercise for patience, to be willing to take them from God's hands as a means. Trials, obstacles, difficulties, and sometimes defeats, are the very food of faith. -- George Müller

Two Quarters Quotes-August

On faith...

I think that Christianity has two emphases.

One is a social emphasis to impart the values of the kingdom of God in society - to relieve the sufferings of the poor, to stand up for the oppressed, to be a voice for those who have no voice.

The other emphasis is to bring people into a personal, transforming relationship with Christ, where they feel the joy and the love of God in their lives. That they manifest what the fifth chapter of Galatians calls 'the fruit of the Spirit'.

Fundamentalism has emphasized the latter, mainline churches have emphasized the former. We cannot neglect one for the other."-Tony Campolo

On prayer...

Prayer lays hold of God’s plan and becomes the link between His will and its accomplishment on earth. Elisabeth Elliot

On living with others...

Since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special attention to those who, by the accidents of time, or place, or circumstances, are brought into closer connection with you. Augustine of Hippo

I have come to realize more and more that the greatest disease and the greatest suffering is to be unwanted, unloved, uncared for, to be shunned by everybody, to be just nobody (to no one). Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Two Quarters Quotes July

On the Gospel..

If the devil were wise enough and would stand by in silence and let the gospel be preached, he would suffer less harm. For when there is no battle for the gospel, it rusts and it finds no cause and no occasion to show its vigor and power. Therefore, nothing better can befall the gospel than that the world should fight it with force and cunning. -- Martin Luther

On Life...

Live intentionally.

True greatness is a passionate love for God that demonstrates itself in an unquenchable love for others. Tim Kimmel

Two Quarters Quotes June 08

How You Live…
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty & well preserved body, but rather a skid in broadside, totally worn out proclamation, “WOW! What a ride!”

Well behaved women have never changed history.

God stuff

Jeremiah 29:11 (The Message) "I'll show up and take care of you as I promised and bring you back home. I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out -plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for."

Finances

If our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc., is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot because our charitable expenditure excludes them. C. S. Lewis

Children, parenting, and family...

Do not mistake a child for his symptom. Erik Erikson

Every parent is at some time the father of the unreturned prodigal with nothing to do but keep his house open to hope. John Ciardi

We must make sure we depict the kind of God a child can approach with confidence. Dr. Theresa Whitehurst

Our commitment is more resilient and reliable than our motivation, willpower, or enthusiasm. Dr. Theresa Whitehurst

Two Quarters Quotes Explained

For those of you who don't know, I am a serious word hog. I love big words, unusual words, quotations, books, anything with words. I used to read the encyclopedia when I was younger. I've also been known to look through phone books and marvel at the names found there. Only my husband knows how truly nerdly I am and, well...now, it's too late. He's kind of stuck with me.

Anyway, my new blog catagory, Two Quarter Quotes, is in honor of the serious logophile that I am. (And yes, that's really a word. ) Halfway through each month I'm going to post some of the best quotes I've heard or read in the last 30 days. (Hence the title "Two Quarter Quotes." Think 2/4 = 1/2. It's little bit of traveling on a tangent to get there but it will do.)
